After a terrible, cliffhanger ending and news of CBC’s cancellations got around, MVP: the secret lives of hockey wives, has been purchased by an American cable network, SoapNet. CBC canceled the show along with other Canadian breakout series jPod and Intelligence, due to “lower-than-hoped-for” ratings.
Each episode of the hockey drama reportedly cost $1.5 million to make per hour.
SoapNet is owned by Walt Disney Co., and reaches 41 million households. Many believe that if MVP catches enough interest in the U.S., CBC may consider licensing the rights for season-two.
I actually didn’t find out until recently that the show not only finished its first season but was canceled as well. It’s really disappointing but completely typical of CBC. The Tudors - which is nothing but royal sex with an English accent - will re-air on CBC for a second season; but something actually mildly entertaining (I will not argue the amount of sex in MVP) gets annexed. Disappointing.
Beginning June 19, shows will air at 11 PM on Thursdays on SoapNet.

Mathematically, the Toronto Maple Leafs are still in the playoff race but you know.
“Look, mostly meaningless hockey is a lot more interesting than watching completely meaningless hockey. ” - Damien Cox for The Spin
Sitting through Saturday’s caliber-lacking game was as painful as the injuries Toronto’s players endured - well almost. Nothing is in stone but, is it possible that the Leafs threw that game? Putting goal tender Andrew Raycroft in net would have done a much simpler job at such a task but that move may have been too obvious. I doubt that a team of grown male athletes would mentally and physically collapse because two of their top players are out but hey, you know.
The Leafs looked burnt out against the Buffalo Sabres who were on a slide - of course that ended Saturday night. Being paid millions to be top athletes and having not played since back-to-back games against Philadelphia Tuesday and Wednesday night, exhaustion should not be an excuse for the loss. Funny enough, I hadn’t heard one Leaf player try.
Wednesday’s victory in Philly suggested that the Leafs could survive a game without their captain Mats Sundin. Despite how much I adore Antropov, TML did survive 3 games earlier this year without him. With Sundin and Antropov both gone? Apparently the Leafs are no good.
Before Toronto played Philadelphia on Tuesday, most articles read that the Toronto Maple Leafs would have to win 11 of their next 12 games. What was of high importance was what team they lost those two points too. Buffalo was a team that Toronto needed to snatch two points from based on standings. Giving one point to Philly was not the worst thing that could happen, but you know.
The fact is we all know that you can’t start playing your top game three-quarters into the season. The Leafs are obviously not a hockey club of playoff material. TML fans watched last season on Easter weekend as Toronto’s playoff hopes were held in the hands of the New Jersey Devils. This spring, I don’t believe there’s an ounce of hope at all.

I adore Nik Antropov.
You may think I’m insane and that is understandable but I have liked the lank since he joined the Leafs under Pat Quinn years ago. Continue Reading »

The “new NHL” (if I can still call it that) has made a fair – crappy – but fair attempt at hindering the chance of injury among players. Hockey is a physical contact sport and with physical contact comes physical injury. Hockey gear, penalties and misconducts all do their part in keeping the players safe; however, sometimes there are accidents and there are injuries which are exceptionally terrible.
If you know your NHL at all, you’ve probably heard of the Richard Zednik accident (more like a freak accident). Continue Reading »

Does your girlfriend play hockey commentary to set the mood for a romantic night? Does your boyfriend get turned on when you wear nothing but his favourite team’s jersey? Look no further, here are tips and tricks to score this Valentines Day.
01. Mix tapes are not very smart and people are very particular when it comes to their favourite style of adult films. Get your bunny in the mood with a private viewing of Don Cherry’s Hard Hitting Hockey.
02. Get crafty. Buy chocolates shaped and coloured like hockey pucks and add your bunny’s favourite team logo on the top with icing.
03. Costumes are fun. Guys, grab your hockey gear. Be the testosterone soaked rookie who just came back from a winning game and has had great accuracy all night! Girls, grab your guys hockey gear, just leave out the pants.
04. Girls, give your men a private strip tease on a hockey stick instead of a poll.
05. Screw candles, put goal lights up in your house to create atmosphere.

This is the worst NHL season I have ever watched - and not entirely because I’m a Toronto Maple Leafs fan (ouch). Games are a constant cycle, every little hit is called and no one is really shinning. Besides Detroit, Anaheim and perhaps Montreal (keeps your eyes out), who is really a playoff contender? In the “new” NHL, teams are not that far from each other in points. There hasn’t been a thing to report except possible player trades, disappointing teams and player shenanigans.
